Why Scolio-Pilates ?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis at 10 years old after my gym teacher noticed my uneven shoulders. Like many, I went through the standard path: wait and see, then a cast, then a brace, and eventually spinal fusion surgery. For years, I lived my life as normally as possible (you can read more about my journey here) until everything changed.

At 41, I began waking up in the middle of the night, screaming from unbearable pain. No pain medication could touch it. I saw countless doctors, but none could explain why the pain had suddenly appeared. Their only answer was to refer me to someone else.

Finally, a general practitioner suggested I look into Scolio-Pilates. She had only heard of it in passing, but admitted, “I can’t find a way to help you, and it can’t hurt to try.”

When I walked into Karena Thek’s studio, I was broken and hopeless. When I walked out, I had a new love for life. Karena taught me exercises that I practiced daily, and slowly, I rebuilt the strength I never thought possible. What’s Scolio-Pilates?

Scolio-Pilates® is a three-dimensional scoliosis-specific exercise program that will put you in control of your scoliosis. It is an easy and accessible scoliosis exercise program for managing scoliosis at home or in a professional setting.

With Scolio-Pilates, you will learn a tailored program for managing your scoliosis using these techniques:

  • Elongate: Lengthen the spine towards neutral.

  • Breathing Techniques: Open up areas of the ribs and lungs that are constrained due to scoliosis.

  • De-rotation: Using wedges to assist the spine towards neutral.

  • Strengthening: Maintain alignment and gain ease of movement to increase function in all your life’s passions.

With Scolio-Pilates, you will learn and practice exercises that you will use in your everyday life.
